Cottage nature sighting: Doe, a deer, a female deer

I hope everyone had a great long weekend (and survived the traffic)!

One story from my weekend: I was taking my toddler for a walk trying to incite a nap. She had been fighting sleep, and my arms were just hanging on—as was my patience for the swarming bugs. Then, as we turned a corner I spotted a beautiful doe and two fawns in lovely spotted coats (just about the size of the one in the photo). I stopped and was able to get my girl to see them before the deer family bounded away into the woods. We caught a few more glimpses of them (once off the road they stopped and turned, standing stock still and watching us, while we stood still watching them in return) before they took off for good, with a flash of mama’s big white tail.

The bonus: Almost immediately after that, I felt the little body in my arms go slack as my little girl gave up and fell asleep. Maybe she just didn’t want to miss that special sight.

Any neat moments from your long weekend?

Black bears in camp in the afternoon... My son and I were working grouting tile on the foyer of our bunkhouse, granddaughter, Sydney age 12, was sitting by the fire. She got up to get something out of the trailer, and 12 feet in front of her, in our camp, at 4:30 in the afternoon, was a young black bear and his sibling. He was so close that Sydney temporarily forgot what to do and yelled and quickly walked towards us. At the same time, the bears were slightly startled and turned around. I am not sure who was more frightened - Sydney or the bears!! We tried to get pictures, but I think the young bears were as frightened as my granddaughter! In 3 years of going north to our camp, this is the first time we have had a close encounter. I think they were just curious, as they were not agressive or threatening. However, it ahs put us on alert.
