The world according to Spell-Check
What happens when you type cottage words into Microsoft Word
Guest post by Jackie Davis, assistant editor.
The spelling-checker in Microsoft Word, while sometimes useful, doesn’t recognize words and names that often come up in Cottage Life magazine. For example, it thinks deputy editor Martin Zibauer should be “Martin Zippier,” “Martin Libeler,” or “Martin Soberer.” Good effort, spell-check! Too bad you’re so epically incorrect.
Other examples:
Muskoka
Spell-check suggests: Mascara
Cottaging
Spell-check suggests: Cottoning
Biffy
Spell-check suggests: Buffy
S’more
Spell-check suggests: O’Mara
Tim Hortons
Spell-check suggests: Tim Hotrods

Same deal with my iPad. (It's actually so bad, I regularly contemplate turning off the checker, as it seems to cause me MORE proofreading work, rather than less.) Try writing Daily Set Marie (Sault Ste Marie) in an iPad email. There are countless other examples. Apparently, Microsoft and Apple aren't so different, in this regard.

Well, I often think I should be zippier, and some might say I should be soberer, but I've never been accused of being a libeler. I oughtta sue Microsoft for libelling me.
