Though most of the photos he takes are on “old dinosaur film cameras,” Fritz Rothermel, who shot a lot of combat photography in Vietnam while in the US army, used a digital camera to photograph the interior of his fishing club’s boathouse in Sans Souci, Georgian Bay. “There are literally only a couple of minutes when the morning sun comes in. I thought, I really need to capture this.’’

Judges’ comments

Good decision, Fritz. This photo is about the light. Obviously, 6:25 a.m. (check out the clock) is a good time to take a photo, but the boathouse would have looked good in lots of different light conditions, even when lit by a flashlight. You could spend a lot of time with this image, because there’s so much to look at. It’s a lesson: You don’t need out-of-the-ordinary subject matter for a successful shot.
