A corny shot | Second prize - Life at the cottage

“I saw the sun going down and I grabbed my camera,” says Mark McKee. “I didn’t even have a chance to set it up.” He was with his family at a friend’s cottage on Clark Lake, Ont., and the boys, Jackson, 9, and Griffin, 7, had spent the entire day swimming. Guess they worked up an appetite: “When the barbecued corn hit the table, they couldn’t wait for the rest of us to sit down.”

Judges’ comments

We’re hungry. The char on the corn is perfect! The boy’s expression is full of so many things: anticipation, hunger, happiness. The shot has some lens flare—where the light blankets the lens and makes everything washed out—which evokes a late-in-the-day feeling. And the blue tones in the photo give it a pleasant coolness. Here, capturing a fleeting moment and a sense of immediacy were the goals, and Mark did a fantastic job.
