2010 photo contest winners

“People make fun of me because I take so many pictures,” says Lynn Quesnel, who shot this boardwalk near her place on Manitoulin Island while out walking. She didn’t fiddle with any camera settings. “I’m not very good at this kind of stuff. All I ever do is take everything on automatic.” She did crouch down for the photo, however. “It just seemed like a good idea to get low.”

Judges’ comments

The leaves make the picture here. Often you see swept-clean boardwalks, which are not as interesting. Lynn used the Rule of Thirds: The retreating horizon, which draws us into the photo, is at roughly the one-third mark in the shot. The light coming from the side is lovely, and picks up highlights in the leaves. What a great day for a walk.
