2010 photo contest winners

Lyn Winans, a cottager on Gull River, Ont., was just “wandering around one morning” in October when he shot this reflection with his digital SLR. Though he more often looks for animal close-ups, he was attracted here to the colours, the mist, and the beautiful pale light.

Judges’ comments

Lyn’s photo is hands-down the best. There’s a wistful quality to it. The mist creates mood, even on a sunny day. Reflections are hard to capture; often, they turn out dark and lack detail. However, this is well-balanced, probably because of the light clouds, which reflected the sunlight to brighten the image overall. The photo seems to curve where the river turns, and that leads the eye beyond the trees. These implied pathways are always successful in landscapes. Truly a striking shot.
