John Grant’s I Wanna Go To Marz
Marz is a candy store John Grant remembers from his childhood; in the song, he lists all the sundae flavours on the menu:
Bittersweet strawberry marshmallow butterscotch
Polarbear cashew dixieland phosphate chocolate
My own childhood ice cream came from a truck stop in Cartier, Ont., where we stopped on the way to the camp. The ice cream came in four flavours only: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and pistachio. I always had strawberry. Vanilla was boring then and pistachio confused me. Chocolate hadn’t yet realized it could be naughty. The ice cream was always a little stale, with tiny, crunchy crystals in it. I still like it that way.
What are your ice cream memories?
