Payne Marine matches gifts to the Georgian Bay Land Trust
About a year ago, Cottage Life magazine published a story about the tough business of operating a marina. We pointed out how much we rely on our local marinas. In addition to keeping our boats running, they keep our cottage lives running too. We suggested that cottagers give back by supporting their local marinas in every way possible.
I thought of this when I learned that third-generation marina operators Mark and Laurie Payne, of Payne Marine in Pointe au Baril, Ont., will celebrate the marina’s 50th anniversary this year with a $25,000 Matching Gift Donation to the Georgian Bay Land Trust for its Land Acquisition Fund.
Here’s how it works: Payne Marine will match every dollar donated to the GBLT up to $25,000, for a combined total donation of $50,000. The marina was already a top donor to the GBLT. For the past five years, Mark has given an annual gift of $5,000 to the organization.
You can donate online, call Laura Gibson at the GBLT (416-440-1519 x 3) to make a donation, or mail a cheque to:

Mark’s grandfather, Vincent Payne, started the family business in 1961. A single dad, he bought vacant land in Pointe au Baril, after fleeing Toronto to provide a better life for his 16-year-old son, Mike. (We get it Vince!) He died in 2005, at the age of 95, having created a legacy for his family. Mark bought the marina from his father in 2002.
Like most marina operators, he and Laurie are generous with their time, too. Both have been volunteers with the Pointe au Baril Islanders Association.
