Remember your escape route!

Anyone else racing around this week, trying to get a zillion things done before “relaxing” over the holidays? I know I am. There are still gifts to be bought (and wrapped), menus to be planned, and parties to be attended over in my neck of the woods. Not to mention, of course, trying to tie up some loose ends around the office before taking off until after the new year. It’s often hard to remember to simply take it easy when our to-do lists are so long. Hopefully all of you can use your memories of the cottage to help you appreciate how it’s really the simple things—time together with friends and family, not a perfectly wrapped gift or a beautifully crafted wreath—that make Christmastime so memorable. At the cottage, we take solace in the single cry of a loon across the lake. Such a simple thing that brings us so much peace. Maybe think of that while you’re rushing around.

On that note, I thought I’d share a slide show of a wee, off-grid cabin that I recently saw on Dwell. It’s a pre-fab, built for a nature writer who wanted to be as close to her subject matter as possible while still maintaining a minimal amount of shelter. I love the way she is getting back to nature!
