Boat-show-20111

[updated] January. Where did it go? This has always been a busy month for me because of the nine-day Toronto International Boat Show smack dab in the middle of it. DH is an exhibitor, so that leaves me on dog-walk duty while he logs the long hours.

I can’t think of a larger category of boaters than cottagers, and of course the Cottage Life editors spend time at the show, too. This year, I walked the aisles with assistant editor Jackie Davis and senior associate editors Liann Bobechko and Blair Eveleigh. It’s hard not to drool. On my wish list: a pwc — yep, I admit it, I’ve driven a few over the years; they’re fun, and I’m a fan when they’re driven responsibly. Also: a more powerful runabout, suitable for the big water we experience around Georgian Bay. One that’s able to carry a big load out to the cottage.

Ah, the boat show, a place to dream! Thanks to the folks at TIBS for supplying these boating shots to help us remember summer.

Just a suggestion: for carrying big loads and dealing with big water, you can't beat the down-east pickup truck, the baby Cape Islander. With rounded chines and a huge bow, these boats are highly efficient, getting great fuel economy while traveling quite swiftly using a relatively small engine. They also come with a wheelhouse to keep everyone out of the weather, and a locking cuddy which can even include a bunk and a head. They rolls a bit more than a boat with hard chines, but they keep you dry in heavy seas. One maker whose boats are available, here in Southern Ontario, is Seabreeze, though their boats are a bit fancy-schmancy for the likes of simple island folk. Anyway, just a thought.

Penny, Liann, Jackie and Blair weren't the only ones drooling over all the beautiful watercraft in January! I guess it was no surprise to have FOCA and Cottage Life run into each other and getting caught up in the aisles at TIBS 2011! So much great water, and so many boats but so little time (and money!)
