  • Eight to ten foot post
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Utility knife
  • Painter’s tape
  • Wood conditioner
  • Paint brush
  • Selection of stains

Step#1: Begin by applying wood conditioner to your post.

Step #2: After the wood conditioner has dried, mark off one foot sections along your post on each side.

Step #3: Apply painter’s tape to alternating sections of the post.

Step #4: Stain the alternating sections and allow to dry.

Step #5: Remove the painter’s tape and mark off the remaining sections with more painter’s tape.

Step #6: Once all the sections on the post are stained and dry, you are ready to make your measurements.

Step #7: Measure and mark off 1/2 inch increments with a pencil.

Step #8: Using a wood burner and your ruler as a guide, burn the measurements all the way up the post.

Kids grow up so fast, and now you can have a permanent record of exactly how fast they grow up with a colourful measuring post, perfect for any cottage as a structural or aesthetic element.
