Introducing the Family Weekend Challenge! Every Friday this summer I’m going to present you with a Family Weekend Challenge. You will have until Monday morning to complete the challenge and post a comment about what you did. The first five people to comment will win a prize.

This weekend’s Challenge is… Go fishing!

If you and your family want to try fishing for the first time (or the first time in a while), you have the perfect opportunity: Ontario Family Fishing Weekend. There are many events going on this weekend in cottage country. And until Sunday (July 11th) at 11:59 p.m., Canadian residents can enjoy fishing in Ontario without a licence. (All other regulations, fees and limits still apply.)

For more information on events in your area, visit the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend site, or call the OFFW Event Information Line at 705-748-6324.

Then, don’t forget to share your story on this blog for your chance to win. The first five fishing tales (big or small, true or tall) posted will win a fishing lure.

Have fun, be safe, and as the anglers say, tight lines!

Thanks for sharing this story, Alex. It sounds like a very exciting fishing day! You'll have to try again now that you've found the good fishing hole - and take with you the lure that you got as a prize for writing up the story!

On the July long weekend, my Dad and I walked down to the dock on Lake Vernon to go fishing. I think we were down there for a very long time without any luck. So eventually we decided to try a different location. My Dad took me near a boat house and again we were not very lucky because those fish would not bite! We stayed there for a long time without one single bite. So my Dad took me down to the mouth of the rapids where we sat on a rock. We were about to give up and go back to the cottage. That's when I felt a tug on the fishing line! We saw a humungous fish jump out of the water!! My Dad said, "it was a Pike". We didn't know how we would get the hook out of it. My Dad didn't have any gloves to remove the hook. We tried to get him onto the rock but he broke free. I was so excited about catching this amazing fish. We walked back to the cottage in time for dinner and told our amazing fish story to everyone there! Story told by Alexander (6 years old)
